Liftoff! has been developed by the Department of Physics at the University of Surrey, with the support of PPARC. A School Rocket programme, designed primarily for pupils aged 11-13, Liftoff! introduces students to the science and technology of rocket flight.

You can download the resource from this CD ROM or at the Liftoff! website www.ph.surrey.ac.uk/liftoff/index.html

SAFETY Advice on safety with rockets is given on the Liftoff! website.

  • Classroom activity worksheets
  • Instructions on building and flying simple powered rockets
  • Contact information for rocket suppliers and clubs
  • Extension activities such as water and air-powered rocket designs

Liftoff! is an exciting context for pupils which you could use during:

  • Lessons on gravity (QCA 9J Gravity and Space)
  • Investigations in science clubs
  • Science fair activities
  • School open days

For older students, the Messages from Space website www.ph.surrey.ac.uk/satellites provides schools with direct access to the University of Surrey's satellite network, containing a live satellite tracking map, direct downloads of real satellite data, and lots of information supporting satellite and space technology components of Physics AS and A2.
