The scale of space is explored in this new resource that uses a familiar card game format to illustrate our Solar System. The game provides pupils with information demonstrating the huge variety of space in a fun-to-play way. The language is simple enough to allow flexibility of use across KS3.

Top Science is sponsored by Philip Harris

The resource consists of 28 colour cards and a 'Categories' card that explains the information given in each category.

In addition to the normal resource files the data for each object is provided in an Excel spreadsheet file.

Information on a range of planets and moons is given in different categories:

  • Description
  • Diameter
  • Mass
  • Orbit time
  • Number of moons
  • Average temperature
  • Gravity
  • Distance from the Sun

Pupils take it in turn to nominate a category that their card scores highly in. If their value beats their opponent's, they win the card. This continues for each successive card until one player has won all the cards and hence the game. In some cases a category is not applicable for a card. The player should then select an alternative category.

  • For more lively cell revision pre-SATs.
  • As an introduction or summary activity for Solar System study.
  • As stimulus material for individual pupil research topics.
  • Pupils could produce their own card. Send them to us and we'll award a prize for the best one received and put it on the website.
