The role of the National Endowment
for Science Technology and the Arts
(NESTA) is to ensure that as many
organisations, government departments,
industry groups and media companies
work together to give Science Year
as much impact as possible.

The launch of Science Year will take
place on 7th September 2001 at eight
venues around the UK. As part of the
launch, we will be holding a national
experiment - 'the Giant Jump' - which
will generate sponsorship to buy cutting-edge
school science equipment and involve
schools all over the UK. It is designed
to be a fun, interactive experiment
for children of all ages and to foster
creativity and problem solving in
Science and Technology. To find out
more about the Giant Jump and to register
for free resources, visit the Science
Year website www.scienceyear.com

What do teachers really want in their
school science labs? This is a question
that Science Year, working with a
national network of science teachers,
will answer. We believe that every
science teacher should have access
to additional teaching tools that
give their creativity, skills and
enthusiasm the best possible canvas,
enabling them to truly inspire the
young people in their classes. The
'Kit Pot' is a fund that will be administered
by Science Year. It will offer every
one of these science teachers some
of the 'kit' that our audit identifies
as inspiration for great science teaching
in 2002.

The BA role in Science Year
will be:
- To
enhance and develop relevant and
successful BA projects in the context
of Science Year and to co-ordinate
these effectively with other Science
Year initiatives.
-
To review and co-ordinate mass participation
science experiments during Science
Year.
-
To manage a grants scheme to enable
schools in socially disadvantaged
areas to take part in science activities
during Science Year.
-
To ensure appropriate Science Year
branding of all relevant and approved
BA activities.
-
To use its regional structure across
the UK to deliver events and activities
locally.
The BA will be directing its Science
Year resources to enhancing existing
activities to make them accessible
to more people by either increasing
or enriching our communication and
young people's activities.
- Young
Investigators and CREST will be
expanded with ideas booklets and
exemplars for schools.
-

to take part in debates on important
issues.
-
A small grants scheme enabling schools
from all areas to take part in activities.

around the country involving young
people and their parents in controversial
science issues using a variety of
